How to Install Sound Forge Pro (Step-by-Step)
Sound Forge Pro changed how it installs when Boris FX took it over from MAGIX in March 2026. If you've been following old tutorials, some of what you'll find online is already out of date — the MAGIX Service Center is still involved in license activation, but the download and install now go through the Boris FX Hub first.
I'll walk through the whole process: system requirements, downloading, installing, activating, and setting up audio hardware. Takes about ten minutes start to finish if your internet connection doesn't crawl.
System Requirements: Check These Before Downloading
According to the official Sound Forge system requirements page, the minimum specs are:
- Operating system: Windows 11
- Processor: 1.4 GHz (multicore recommended for heavy processing)
- RAM: 2 GB minimum
- Storage: ~500 MB for the base install, more if you install additional content
- Sound card: Windows-compatible sound card required; ASIO-compatible recommended for low-latency recording
- Display: 1024 × 768 minimum
- Internet connection: Required for download and activation
Windows 10 is not officially listed as supported in the Boris FX version. Some users report it still runs, but don't expect Boris FX support to help you troubleshoot a Windows 10 issue.
Sound Forge Pro is Windows-only. If you're on macOS, the Mac version was discontinued before the Boris FX acquisition and hasn't been revived. Nothing to install here for Mac users right now.
Step 1 — Get the Boris FX Hub
Everything starts at the Sound Forge download page on the Boris FX site. Whether you're downloading the free trial or you've already purchased a license, the entry point is the same: the Boris FX Hub.
The Hub is Boris FX's installer and license manager — the same application they use for all their products including Sapphire and Continuum. It handles download, installation, and activation in one place.
Click the download button. The Hub installer is small — under 100 MB — so it downloads fast. Run it when it finishes.
Step 2 — Create a Boris FX Account (or Sign In)
The Hub asks you to sign in when it opens. If you don't have a Boris FX account yet, click Create Account and fill in your details. This is where your license is stored, so use an email address you'll actually keep access to.
If you already have a Boris FX account from other products (Sapphire, Continuum, Mocha Pro), use that same login — your Sound Forge license will appear in the same account.
Former MAGIX customers: you'll still use a Boris FX account here, not your MAGIX account. The MAGIX Service Center comes into play during activation (covered below), but the initial login is Boris FX.
Step 3 — Install Sound Forge Through the Hub
Once you're logged in, the Hub shows the products available to your account. Find Sound Forge and click Install.
The Hub downloads the full Sound Forge installer and runs it automatically. The install itself takes two to five minutes depending on your machine. You'll see a progress bar in the Hub — let it run, don't interrupt it mid-install.
When it finishes, Sound Forge appears in your Start menu and on your desktop.
Step 4A — Activate the Free Trial (No Purchase Yet)
If you're running the trial, the process goes like this:
- After installation completes, you'll see an option in the Hub: "Request an Unrestricted Trial of Sound Forge after installation" — select this.
- Click Start Free Trial.
- At the success confirmation, click Back to App.
- Sound Forge launches in full trial mode.
The trial is 15 days, fully featured, no credit card required. Every feature you'd get in the paid version works during the trial period — that includes the iZotope restoration suite, the mastering tools, and batch processing. Nothing is locked or watermarked.
One thing worth knowing: the trial runs for 15 calendar days from activation, not 15 days of actual use. Activate it when you have time to actually use it.
Step 4B — Activate a Purchased License
If you've bought Sound Forge through the Boris FX webshop, activation works through the MAGIX Service Center — yes, even though Boris FX now owns the product. The underlying license infrastructure is still MAGIX's system.
- Launch Sound Forge after installation.
- In the Welcome dialog, click Enter serial number.
- Type in the serial number from your purchase confirmation and your email address.
- Click Register and activate online now.
- The MAGIX Service Center opens. Either log in with an existing MAGIX account or click Continue to register a new one.
- Fill in the required fields and click Complete Registration.
The activation requires an internet connection. If you're trying to activate on a machine without internet access, contact Boris FX support — there's an offline activation path but it requires going through support manually.
Step 5 — Set Up Your Audio Device
This is the step most tutorials skip, and it's the one that causes the most first-launch confusion. Sound Forge opens fine but makes no sound, or has crackling on playback, because it's pointed at the wrong audio device.
Go to Options → Preferences → Audio Device.
You'll see a list of audio devices available on your system. Two things to set:
Playback device: Set this to whatever you actually listen through — your audio interface, your headphone output, your studio monitors. Don't leave it on "Microsoft Sound Mapper" unless that's your only option; it adds latency and occasionally causes playback issues with high-resolution files.
Driver mode: If you have an audio interface with ASIO drivers installed, switch the driver mode to ASIO here. ASIO reduces monitoring latency significantly — relevant if you're recording live audio through Sound Forge. If you're only editing and not recording live, the default Windows Audio driver works fine.
After changing audio settings, restart Sound Forge to make sure they take effect cleanly.
Step 6 — Install VST Plugins (Optional)
Sound Forge Pro supports VST2, VST3, and DirectX plugins. If you have plugins from other software — EQs, compressors, reverbs — you can bring them in here.
Go to Options → Preferences → VST Effects. Add the folder where your VST plugins live — typically C:\Program Files\VstPlugins or C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3. Click Scan. Sound Forge finds and indexes whatever's in those folders.
After scanning, your plugins show up in the effects chain under Plug-In Chainer. They work the same way as the built-in effects — you apply them from the Process menu or drag them into the chain.
One note on DirectX plugins: if you have legacy DirectX effects from older software, Sound Forge Pro still runs them. Most modern plugins ship as VST3 now, but if you've been sitting on something old that only exists as DirectX, it'll load.
Upgrading from Sound Forge Pro 18 (MAGIX Version)
If you're coming from Sound Forge Pro 18 under MAGIX, the upgrade path runs through the Boris FX webshop. Former MAGIX customers can upgrade at a reduced price through December 5, 2026 — you'll need your original MAGIX serial number or order reference during the upgrade purchase.
Once you've purchased the upgrade, the install process above is identical. Your old projects and settings don't carry over automatically, but Sound Forge Pro uses standard audio file formats — your existing WAV and project files open without conversion.
Common Install Problems
The Hub installs but Sound Forge doesn't appear after
This usually means the download was interrupted. In the Hub, find Sound Forge and click Uninstall, then Install again. Let the full download complete before closing anything.
Activation says "serial number not found"
Double-check that you're entering the serial number from the Boris FX confirmation email, not from an old MAGIX purchase if you're doing a new purchase. For upgrades, the MAGIX serial number is used during the upgrade purchase flow, but the resulting new serial comes from Boris FX. If you're still stuck, Boris FX support can look up your license by order reference.
No sound on first launch
Audio device isn't configured. Go to Options → Preferences → Audio Device and set your playback device manually as described in Step 5.
Crackling or dropout during playback
Two common causes: buffer size is too small, or you're not using an ASIO driver. In Options → Preferences → Audio Device, increase the buffer size (try 512 or 1024 samples) or switch to ASIO if your interface supports it.
VST plugins aren't showing up
Sound Forge won't find plugins automatically — you have to point it at the folder manually (Options → Preferences → VST Effects → Add folder → Scan). If a plugin still doesn't appear after scanning, it may be 32-bit only. Sound Forge Pro is 64-bit and won't load 32-bit plugins without a bridge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sound Forge Pro free to try?
Yes — 15-day free trial, fully featured, no credit card. Download starts at vegascreativesoftware.com through the Boris FX Hub.
Does Sound Forge Pro work on Windows 10?
The official minimum is Windows 11. Some users report it works on Windows 10, but it's not officially supported and Boris FX support won't troubleshoot Windows 10 issues.
Can I install Sound Forge Pro on more than one computer?
Standard licenses cover one activation. Contact Boris FX support if you need to transfer your license to a new machine — they handle deactivation and reactivation through the MAGIX Service Center.
Do I need an internet connection after installation?
Only for activation. Once activated, Sound Forge Pro runs offline without issues.
How do I install ASIO drivers for my audio interface?
ASIO drivers come from your audio interface manufacturer — Focusrite, PreSonus, MOTU, Universal Audio, etc. Download them from the manufacturer's website and install them separately before configuring Sound Forge. Once installed, they'll appear in the driver selection list inside Sound Forge's audio preferences.
Can I use my MAGIX Sound Forge Pro 18 serial number in the Boris FX version?
Your MAGIX serial number is used during the upgrade purchase at the Boris FX webshop, not directly for activation. Once you complete the upgrade purchase, you get a new Boris FX serial number for the current version.
